How ProbaBaby Works
ProbaBaby is built on real Mendelian genetics — to our knowledge, no other baby-prediction app computes Punnett squares before it draws anything. The probabilities are calculated in code first and the image is generated to match them, so you get a prediction you can read, not just look at.
The 4-Step Prediction Process
Add Family Traits
Enter eye color, eye shape, hair details (including childhood color), face shape, distinctive features and ancestry for both parents. Scientific and Premium also ask for skin tone, height and build; Premium alone adds all four grandparents for up to 95% confidence. (Blood type isn't a prediction input — it's one of the free tools in the app.)
- 6 trait categories per person
- Premium adds all four grandparents — that's what reveals hidden recessive genes
- Up to 95% confidence, on Premium with complete family data
- Detects traits that skip generations
Upload Photos or Use TrueDepth Face Scan (Standard and Premium)
Scientific Mode skips this step entirely — it never asks for a photo. For Standard and Premium, upload clear front-facing photos for AI facial analysis, or use iPhone's TrueDepth camera (the Face ID sensor) for 3D facial mapping. Parent photos are deleted a few hours after your prediction; the prediction itself clears after 48 hours by default (24 hours to 30 days, your choice).
- Photo upload for all iPhones
- TrueDepth 3D face scan (iPhone X and later)
- AI analyzes facial structure and proportions
- Photos deleted a few hours after your prediction
AI + Genetics Analysis
Our Mendelian genetics engine calculates trait probabilities with Punnett squares first. Those probabilities are then handed to the AI: Google Gemini writes the genetics report in your own language, and the image model draws a baby constrained by the same numbers — never a free-hand blend of the two photos.
- Punnett square calculations for each trait
- A polygenic model for skin tone; a mid-parental band for height
- Recessive gene detection with grandparent data
- AI constrained by genetic probabilities
Get Results
Receive two baby images — one for the dominant-trait scenario and one for the recessive — plus trait-by-trait probability breakdowns, Punnett square visualizations and a genetics report.
- Two babies, not one: dominant and recessive scenarios side by side
- Genetic report with probability percentages
- Punnett square visualizations
Prediction Modes Explained
Three modes designed for different needs and budgets
Scientific Mode
4 credits
Pure genetics analysis (no photos)
Perfect for understanding genetic inheritance without image generation. Ideal for educational purposes.
- Statistical genetic calculations
- Comprehensive PDF genetic report
- Punnett square breakdowns
- No photos required or generated
Standard Mode
8 credits
Detailed genetic predictions
Input parent traits manually, receive Mendelian genetics calculations with Punnett square breakdowns.
- Two baby images — a dominant-trait and a recessive-trait scenario
- Punnett square visualizations
- Trait-by-trait probability breakdown
- Two-sheet PDF report with a Punnett square per cross
- Balanced speed and accuracy
Premium Mode
12 credits
Maximum genetic accuracy
Add all four grandparents' traits for three-generation analysis. Unlock recessive gene detection and up to 95% confidence.
- Two baby images at the highest model tier — dominant and recessive scenarios
- Three-generation genetic analysis
- The same two-sheet PDF, plus the three-generation crosses
- Video animation
- Up to 95% confidence score
Understanding Confidence Scores
Parents-only predictions start at 60% and reach about 70% once you add ethnicity and both parent photos. There are no fixed per-mode ranges — confidence is computed per prediction and rises as you add family data.
Adding all four grandparents and childhood details raises confidence toward our hard 95% cap.
Genetics involves probability, not certainty. Even with perfect data, some traits are influenced by 100+ genes, environmental factors affect expression, and rare mutations can occur.
The Science Behind the Scenes
Two-Gene Eye Color Model (OCA2/HERC2)
ProbaBaby uses the scientifically-accepted two-gene model. OCA2 controls melanin production, HERC2 regulates OCA2 expression. Our algorithm accounts for intermediate phenotypes beyond the basic brown/blue binary.
Polygenic Traits
Skin tone is modeled as a weighted additive score over three pigmentation genes — SLC24A5, SLC45A2 and TYR — on a 0–100 melanin index, reported with 68% and 95% bands. Height is not modeled from variants: we average the parents' own heights and report a band. Where you tell us your ancestry, we adjust the allele frequencies to match.
Privacy & Data Security
What happens to your photos — they run your prediction, then leave our servers
- Photos encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
- Your face is checked on your device first; only then does the cloud model read facial structure — never your genes
- Parent photos are deleted a few hours after your prediction; the prediction itself clears after 48 hours by default (24 hours to 30 days, your choice). Scientific mode uses no photos.
- Only trait metadata retained for predictions
- Row Level Security — the database itself decides which rows your account can reach, not just the app
Frequently Asked Questions
ProbaBaby uses scientifically-accepted genetic models (Mendelian inheritance, Punnett squares, two-gene eye color model) to calculate trait probabilities. However, it is an entertainment and educational tool - not a medical diagnostic device.
Scientific Mode is fully photo-free by design and works from trait information for both parents alone. Standard and Premium do need a photo or a TrueDepth face scan of each parent, so pick Scientific if photos aren't available to you.
Use Standard Mode — it still runs the full Punnett-square engine, still returns a recessive-trait baby alongside the dominant one, and a parent's childhood hair color already exposes hidden alleles. What Premium adds is the third generation: four grandparents pin down which alleles a parent is carrying. If you'd rather not upload photos at all, Scientific Mode works from traits alone.
No. ProbaBaby only analyzes visible physical traits (eye color, hair color, etc.). For genetic health screening, consult a medical geneticist.
Scientific Mode: about 2 minutes. Standard Mode: about 2 minutes. Premium Mode: about 5 minutes — Premium runs the largest model and also renders a short video in the background.
Yes, for predictions — the genetics engine and the AI both run on our servers. The app tells you when you've lost connection and queues what you log so it syncs once you're back, but a prediction has to reach the server.
