Wake windows by age answer one question: how long can my baby comfortably stay awake between sleeps? The short version, since that is what you came for — the commonly quoted ranges are roughly **35 to 60 minutes for a newborn, one to two hours at three months, two to three hours at six months, and three to four hours by the first birthday.** The full table is directly below, and so is the caveat that belongs with it.

Now the part most charts leave out. The bodies that actually publish infant sleep guidance do not publish a wake-window table — not the AAP, not the NHS, not the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. What they publish is total sleep per 24 hours. Wake windows are arithmetic layered on those totals plus a great deal of accumulated observation, which makes them a starting guess rather than a target you can fail.

**Where each column comes from.** From four months, the total-sleep figures are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's own recommendation (12–16 hours per 24 hours to 12 months, 11–14 hours from one to two years). The three rows marked † are not: the AASM deliberately publishes no figure under four months, "due to the wide range of normal variation in duration and patterns of sleep, and insufficient evidence for associations with health outcomes", so those three ranges are convention. Only the newborn row is anchored at all — the AAP puts newborn sleep at 16 to 17 hours and the NHS says it "can be around 18 hours" — while the 6–12-week and 3–4-month totals have no guideline body behind them. The nap counts sit inside the ranges a 2012 systematic review reports. **The whole wake-window column is convention** — arithmetic and accumulated observation, not a published recommendation, at every age.

By the same convention, the first wake window of the day is treated as the shortest and the last one before bed as the longest. If your baby sits outside a range but feeds well, gains weight and settles, the range is wrong about your baby rather than the other way round.

## What the published numbers actually say

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's consensus statement recommends **12 to 16 hours per 24 hours including naps for infants aged 4 to 12 months**, and 11 to 14 hours for one- to two-year-olds. It pointedly declines to make a recommendation for babies under four months, citing the wide range of normal variation and insufficient evidence — which is a fair warning about every newborn schedule you will ever read.

For the youngest babies, the AAP says newborns sleep about **16 to 17 hours a day, often in stretches of only one or two hours**. The NHS says a newborn's total daily sleep varies but "can be around 18 hours", and that between three and six months *some* babies may sleep 5 to 8 hours or longer at night — "but not all", which is the half of that sentence most charts drop.

For naps, the best single source is a 2012 systematic review that pooled diary and questionnaire data from 34 studies. Mean naps per day came out at **3.1 at 0–5 months, 2.2 at 6–11 months and 1.2 between one and two years**. The same review found the longest overnight sleep stretch grows from a mean of 5.7 hours in the first five months to 8.3 hours between 6 and 24 months; that night wakings average 1.7 per night at 0–2 months, dropping to about 0.8 at 3–6 months; and that it takes an infant about 19 minutes on average to fall asleep once settled.

Look at the spread rather than the means. The normal range around 3.1 naps at 0–5 months runs from roughly one nap to five. Two thriving babies the same age can be four naps apart.

## Where the wake-window number comes from

It is arithmetic, and you can check it. A day is 24 hours. Subtract total sleep, and what is left is awake time, split across the number of gaps between sleeps.

Take a seven-month-old sleeping 14 hours: 11 hours overnight plus three one-hour naps. That leaves 10 hours awake spread over four gaps — about 2.5 hours each, which is what the chart says for that age. Now drop the same baby to two naps. Total sleep falls to 13 hours, so awake time rises to 11 hours — and it is split three ways instead of four, which pushes each window past three and a half hours.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about wake windows: **the window and the nap count are one number, not two.** You cannot lengthen the windows and keep the same number of naps and expect the day to add up. When a chart says one thing and your day says another, one of the two figures has to give — and it is almost always the nap count that has quietly changed first.

## Cues beat the clock

The chart tells you when to start watching. Your baby tells you when to move. Cue lists are convention rather than a validated scale, so treat the order rather than any single sign as the useful part:

- **Early** — the gaze goes distant or slides past you, movements slow down, a favourite toy stops being interesting.
- **Middle** — yawning, rubbing eyes or ears, jerky arms, red or pink eyelids and brows, fussing at the breast or bottle mid-feed.
- **Late** — arching, back-stiffening, a cry that does not respond to any of the usual fixes, and a baby who is suddenly very hard to put down.

Aim at the middle band. If you only start heading for the cot once the crying begins you are already late, and the settle will often take longer than the nap you were hoping for. The AAP's advice from around four months is to put babies down drowsy rather than fully asleep, which is much easier to do if you left the room before the late cues arrived.

Two honest caveats. In the first weeks, tired, hungry, windy and over-stimulated look nearly identical, so nobody reads a newborn correctly every time. And some babies never show mid-band cues at all — those are the ones where the clock has to do more of the work.

## What changes around four months

Newborns have no established circadian rhythm, which is why their sleep is scattered evenly around the clock and each period is short. The 2012 review's background sets the turn at roughly **10 to 12 weeks**: "the circadian rhythm begins to emerge, and infant sleep becomes increasingly nocturnal." AAP guidance puts the arrival of regular sleep cycles somewhere in the four-to-six-month range: its "Getting Your Baby to Sleep" page says about four months, its sleep hub says about six.

Three practical consequences follow, and they all land at once:

**Wake windows stretch fastest here.** Read the table across these rows and the window roughly doubles in a couple of months — a baby who could only manage 75 minutes in February is doing two and a half hours by April.

**Nights consolidate, then slow down.** In the 2012 review, the longest overnight sleep stretch grew by about 39 minutes per month between months one and six, then slowed sharply to about 10 minutes per month from months 7 to 12. The dramatic improvements are front-loaded.

**Night wakings do not vanish.** The review's pooled band means fall from 1.7 a night at 0–2 months to about 0.8 at 3–6 months, then tick back up to about 1.1 between 7 and 11 months. Treat that bump carefully: the same review's fitted curve declines steadily right across the first year, so the rise sits in the pooled band means rather than in the model, and nothing in the paper marks a spike at four months. What the numbers do support is the floor — waking at night is still normal at the end of the first year, and one at nine months is not evidence that an earlier gain was lost.

## When the window is wrong

Both errors look the same from the outside, because both produce short naps. Use the settle, not the nap:

- **Too short (under-tired):** cheerful and alert well past the window, then takes far longer than the roughly 19-minute average to fall asleep, plays or chats in the cot, and wakes after one sleep cycle.
- **Too long (over-tired):** crying starts before you reach the cot, wired and frantic rather than sleepy, fights being put down, early-morning waking creeps in.

No trial tells you how fast to adjust, so the practical convention is a quarter of an hour at a time, held for three or four days before you judge it. Babies are noisy data: one bad nap tells you nothing, a run of five tells you a lot. ## The window matters less than the surface

A perfectly timed nap on the wrong surface is a bad trade. The AAP's guidance is the same for naps as for nights: on the back, on a firm flat surface, in your room but not your bed for at least six months, with pillows, quilts, bumpers and soft toys out of the sleep space. If your baby falls asleep in a swing, car seat, stroller or carrier, move them onto a firm flat surface on their back as soon as you can.

**What is a wake window?**

A wake window is the stretch of time a baby is awake between one sleep ending and the next one starting.
